Beaumont, bowlers set up huge win for England

None of the West Indies batters bar Deandra Dottin got to double figures

A crafty half-century from opener Tammy Beaumont coupled with a disciplined bowling performance allowed England to register a crushing win over West Indies in the opening game of the five-match T20I series at County Ground, Derby.

Skipper Heather Knight opted to bat on a dry and slow Derby surface, and England got off to a brisk start through their openers. Knight along with Amy-Ellen Jones weighed in with useful knocks to support Beaumont's innings as England eyed a total of 175-plus at one stage.

However, West Indies' bowlers triggered a mini-collapse as the last 26 balls of the innings saw five wickets falling for just 27 runs to put a lid on the scoring rate. England still had got a par score given the sluggish nature of the surface and the bowlers then got into the act in the second half.

Much of West Indies' chances depended on their explosive top order but Hayley Mathews and Stefanie Taylor departed cheaply, leaving opener Deandra Dottin with a humongous task. She dug in, and managed to get some momentum into her innings too en route to a well-paced fifty but found no support at all.

In fact, none of the West Indies batters bar Dottin got to double figures which is a testimony of England's dominance with the ball. She batted almost right through the innings but at no point were the visitors with any chance of chasing down the total. The last few overs of the game were purely of academic interest.

The bowlers exploited the two-paced nature of the deck to the hilt, bowling slower and into the surface to deny the batters any freebies. The spin pair of Sophie Ecclestone and Sarah Glenn also hit accurate lengths and lines, complementing the seamers perfectly.

Given the way the track slowed down in the second half, the toss will be crucial in the upcoming games, given that all the matches are being played at the same venue.

Brief scores: England 163-8 (Beaumont 62, Selman 3-26) beat West Indies 116-6 (Dottin 69, Sciver 2-16) by 49 runs
