RESIDENT GAMER: Return to 'Black Desert Online'

What I’ve spent most of my time in game on, though, is far from the battlefield.

What I’ve spent most of my time in game on, though, is far from the battlefield.
“Black Desert Online” is host to an intricate farming and trading system, not to mention full of great ways to create your own gear and add to the player economy.
The biggest part of all of this is the node system. Each city or village or farm or special area you come across is part of a giant system of nodes, all of which can be invested in and connected.
The more nodes you have connected, the bigger your trade system can be. While this isn’t the biggest part of the game, I think it’s one of the coolest. Many of the different things you can do tie directly into the trading system, and it’s something you don’t really see in many other games.
Here’s a scenario you might see: I’ve invested in the Loggia Farm node, which has a secondary node that allows my workers to harvest potatoes. Using the harvested potatoes, I can have another worker create potato crates. These crates can then be loaded into my trade wagon and taken and sold at pure profit to other cities which are connected via the node system.

Some of those steps aren’t necessary, though. Each town has a Trade Master who sells and purchases items in the trading system. You can travel across the entire world selling stuff and earning currency. It’s quite a lot of fun, and is a great change of pace from the constant fighting for your life.
The worker system I mentioned earlier is for a lot more than trading. Each of the major cities, and some of the minor areas, have buildings which can be rented and turned into various things. You can use some as personal residences for your characters, and these can be decorated using items you either purchase or create. You can also turn buildings into refineries or weapon-production facilities or shipyards. There are tons of things you can do, and part of the strategy is to figure out what works best for your needs and how you can get the most out of the city.
Apart from having your workers do everything, you can also take advantage of the Processing system. You can take items you gather out in the field, like lumber or ore or herbs or fish, and convert them into other things via Processing. You can turn lumber into wooden planks. You can dry out fish to be used in other materials. You can take the potatoes you farmed earlier and convert them into flour. On an advanced level, you can also delve into Cooking and Alchemy. Many players don’t get too involved in that aspect, so certain items can be made and sold to other players at a premium.

I’ve spent a significant amount of time working on everything but the normal stuff in “Black Desert Online.” Only in the past several days have I decided to start progressing my character’s level and fighting abilities. There’s just so much to do, and it’s all a joy to experience.
