[10/11/2018, Indiana] – The Center for Hospice Care, an Indiana-based organization providing compassionate hospice care, assisted living, and grief counseling services, celebrated its decade-long partnership with The Palliative Care Association of Uganda (PCAU) on July 31, 2018.

The Okuyamba Fest, based on the Luganda word for “help,” is an annual celebration that recognizes the beneficial partnership. The Center for Hospice Care increases the visibility, importance, and need for hospice and palliative care, while the PCAU strives to make these services more accessible in Uganda.

A Ten-Year Partnership

The partnership began in 2008, when the Center for Hospice Care reached out to the PCAU, hoping to affiliate itself with their cause. Since then, the connection formed has benefitted both organizations as they help more people in need of hospice and palliative care.

Each Okuyamba Fest celebrates the accomplishments of the partnership. The festival features food and dancing from both cultures, auctions for Ugandan artifacts, and a few words from the heads of both organizations thanking everyone involved in the endeavor.

Palliative Care in Uganda

This partnership seeks to assist the PCAU’s mission in expanding and improving palliative and hospice care in Uganda, a developing country with limited access to healthcare. With the Center for Hospice Care’s assistance, the PCAU increased palliative care accessibility from 34 out of 112 districts in Uganda to 97 districts.

The collaboration has also provided the PCAU with funding and support to send 60 nurses to undergo a clinical palliative care diploma program. PCAU Country Director and founder Rose Kiwanuka says she is thankful for the Center for Hospice Care’s assistance in increasing PCAU’s visibility and forging her organization’s path to providing accessible palliative care.
