The Importance of Self Service Password Management and Reset Software for Enterprises

A large chunk of the distress calls that IT support desks on a daily basis relate to accounts unlocking due to wrong password entry or as in certain cases, users forgetting the passwords.

Not only is it a heavy burden on the IT support staff but also is a waste of time for the employees. Thankfully, the emergence of the self service resetting software and management solutions have given most enterprises in the IT industry a breath of relief.

There are plenty of vendors in this self service password management arena who offer their service on a variety of platforms like Windows, Remote Assistance, GINA, etc. Each of them has their own level of authentication and security measures that may or may not suit the credential requirements of an IT enterprise. The process of how a self service password resetting software is pretty simple. Users create a profile for themselves with their AD account and set answers for predetermined questions to identify themselves when a request for password reset is made.

Once the answers are fed in and the registration process is completed, the system encrypts the answers and stores it in its database. These answers will be brought back and matched to the answers provided by the users when they request for a password reset. Depending on the standard of the vendor system, users can reset their password using any generic account, or by accessing the link from another workstation of the same enterprise.

Self service password management is very important for a digital enterprise as it saves time and in the long run is economical compared to the idle hours and resources that will be wasted by employees until their passwords are reset. Given the data security measures taken by IT firms today, a tool like the Microsoft Password Manager is simply insufficient and does not cater to elaborate needs like generic password generation on request.

In terms of authentication of user profile, a large number of vendors today provide a two factor authentication. These could include requesting for a unique alphanumeric code provided with the security fobs, sending a onetime password to the user and asking for the same input and thirdly using preset security codes provided by the vendor.

In time when IT firms are trying hard to cut expenses to make themselves profitable, self service password management tools are the best option to save labor time and enterprise resources. Not only do they reduce the need for more staff numbers but also makes an enterprise more efficient with quick resolutions for frequent disruptions like account locking due to password mismatch. This service is all set to grow in large numbers in the coming years as self service password reset tools will provide a safe and easier way of managing user credentials. The industry will also stand to gain a lot from these services as they will automate a large portion of frequent IT distress calls.
