Decorating with shells

From transparent jars and metallic glasses filled with shells to bed linens and cushions representing coral and sand dollars…

Shells are protective outer layers generated by animals living underwater. They are usually found on beaches, cases in which they are mostly empty. Seashells are used by people for many purposes, such as for decorating, growing pearls, gastronomy, and for creating musical instruments out of them. If you are interested in seashells as decorations, contact Pippi Lifestyle, an Australian company that can provide you with various types of seashells.

To decorate a room with shells, first you have to group them in categories, based on their size. Then, decide how you want to display them: in a transparent bowl, in a long and beautifully coloured vase, on one of the plates that you have bought on your recently-ended trip, or simply here and there on closets or in glass cases. To make sure that you create a cozy beach-related atmosphere in the house, use some other decorations as well, like finger starfish, knobbly sea urchins, and spider conches.

For creating a romantic atmosphere for you and your partner to enjoy, you can use seashells as candle holders. Purchase several floating candles and place them inside some murex or cockle coverings, that you can get at Pippi Lifestyle. Or, if you are into homemade things, you can always melt some candle wax and pour it while it is hot into some seashells, without forgetting to add a wick to each of the newly-formed candles. Seashells are usually resistant, however, for creating homemade candles out of them, they have to be pretty thick.

Seashells can be used as decorations inside and also outside the house. Some of them are suitable to be used on a daily basis, while others are perfect for feasts and special events. In this second category, we can include the large Lampus Ranella conches, very well regarded because of their colouring and size, the murex coverings, lovely in any beach house and on any wedding table, and the nautilus outer layers, so outstanding in their pearly or striped natural finish, that even your best friends would be jealous and desire to purchase this type of decorations too, for their own enjoyment.

For a much more powerful impact, seashells should be combined with various other types of beach items, like marine lanterns, coastal furniture and cushions, bed linens, outdoor hammocks, and elegant centerpieces represented by coral and sea snails. Pay attention to the colour and size of the products used in these combinations, and choose only complementary items. For example, get a mirror in a blue frame, and attach tiny cream conches to the frame for a "beachy" appearance, decorate the living room with lots of cushions featuring clam or scallop seashells on a white background, and adorn your kitchen tables with moon seashells that play the role of salt and pepper kits.
