As a result of his work as a registered respiratory therapist, Thomas Karpiniuk has become an advocate for improved respiratory health. Some topics that Thomas Karpiniuk is interested in include smoking cessation and reducing exposure of second hand smoke to non smokers. Thomas Karpiniuk is pleased that his home state of Florida has adopted legislation that makes smoking in enclosed indoor facilities against the law. He encourages all people, especially parents with children at home, to consider not smoking indoors. "Many respiratory issues can be prevented. Smoking cessation is a key factor in respiratory health," says Thomas Karpiniuk. Thomas Karpiniuk also promotes programs that help people learn about COPD. COPD is sometimes referred to as emphysema or chronic bronchitis. Thomas Karpiniuk is concerned about COPD because it affects nearly as many people as lung cancer every year. Thomas Karpiniuk believes that education in the key to prevention.

Thomas Karpiniuk is regarded by his supervisors and colleagues as a hard working professional. His patients feel the same way. Thomas Karpiniuk believes that improving his knowledge through professional development is important. Thomas Karpiniuk devotes many hours to continuing education. He is also a member of professional organizations that are dedicated to the field of respiratory therapy. Thomas Karpiniuk is a member of the Florida Society for Respiratory Care. He is also a member of National Board for Respiratory Care. Both organizations give Thomas Karpiniuk the opportunity to network with colleagues in the field of respiratory therapy. "I appreciate the online learning resources that professional organizations supply. I think it is important to keep up on emerging trends and scientific findings that relate to my job as a respiratory therapist," says Thomas Karpiniuk.
