The worst things we’ve ever heard about oral health

Posted February 8, 2017 by ThesmilebarBangkok

Since we are children we have heard about advices and beliefs about how to take care of our teeth, how to maintain a good oral health. But some of these advices are totally wrong. Some are better than others. Here are some of the worst:

1 The harder the toothbrush, the better.

There are various toothbrush types you can select from. You may have heard that a harder toothbrush will be more effective for scrubbing teeth. But the reality is that a toothbrush with stiff ,hard bristles may do more harm than good. Harder bristles tend to push gums upwards, causing them to recede in the long run. A toothbrush that has soft, long bristles is going to be better for your oral health in the long run. Soft bristles tend to clean your teeth without being too abrasive or irritating your gums in any way.

2 Put an Aspirin tablet beside your tooth to ease the toothache

This is one of the worst advices you can get. You may cause more harm than good by keeping Aspirin in your mouth too long as it is very acidic. Furthermore Aspirin needs to be swallowed for you to feel its effectiveness in easing the pain.

3 It’s okay if there are cavities on baby teeth.

For a good foundation for great oral health habits, it is a good idea to begin with the baby teeth rather than start only when the permanent teeth come out. Many people believe that it is okay for cavities to develop on the non-permanent set but it is is false since it is the roots of those same teeth that will be the foundation of the real teeth.

4 The whiter your teeth, the healthier they are.

There are many natural shades for teeth and even if they are not pure white in color, teeth can be healthy. White teeth are not necessarily the healthiest of teeth. But it is very stylish at the moment to have white, bright teeth. You should know that for a healthy smile, you will need to incorporate a routine of cleaning your mouth twice a day, everyday (toothbrushing and flossing) .

5 You’re too late for a set of braces.

There is no prescribed age for braces and getting a set to correct your tooth and no matter what age you happen to be at the moment. These days, there are more options for orthodontic treatment available to keep the best smile.
