The Pipe Surgeon explains how kitchen drains and traps work

The Pipe Surgeon wants you to know that kitchen traps, also known as sink drains, are made of slip washers, nuts, and one-and-a-half-inch tubes also called pipes.

Such construction allows for quick assembly and disassembly. Most plastic tubes and nuts can be tightened and loosened by hand. In contrast to plastic, pipes made of chrome will corrode over time. Rubber parts will crumble. Those are signs that you need to get a new kitchen trap. Plastic tubes will last for a really long time. No matter what your traps are made of, they may require an alignment. If they get bumped out of alignment, you should take them apart and re-assemble them properly.

The configuration of each specific trap depends on how many bowls there are in the sink, whether or not you have a waste disposal unit, and whether you have a drain line from your dishwasher.

If you need a new kitchen trap, you should buy a sink drain kit. Such kits usually contain all the necessary pipes, fittings, and washers that you will need to connect the tailpieces of a sink to the trap part, which is located on the wall or in the floor. For wall traps, you will need a kit that includes a P-Trap. Multiple sink bowls are usually designed to share a single trap. PVC and chromed brass fittings are usually easier to pull apart, drain, and reassemble.

To make sure you sink doesn’t leak after you align or change a drain, do an extensive test. The best way to go is to close the stopper, fill the bowl with water, and then release the stopper. Once the water drains, feel the pipes. If they are completely dry, you have done the job perfectly. You will need to tighten the parts of the trap, or realign them again, if there’s any indication of moisture.

Use a spud wrench if you need to tighten or loosen the strainer body. Usually, the body of a strainer will have a layer of plumber’s putty on the rim to seal it above the drain.
