After establishing himself in his work as The Pipe Surgeon in Massachusetts, Jared Derrico was diagnoses with testicular cancer. Now four years cancer free, he looks back on this difficult journey.

In 2013, life was going brilliantly for Jared Derrico. Not only had he built his own business as The Pipe Surgeon from the ground up, establishing a growing list of regular clients in the process, but he was also living happily with his family. However, in May of that year he received news that shocked him to his core. While cleaning up at a job he had just completed, he fell to the floor in excruciating pain and rushed to hospital. He was met there by his wife and youngest son, who stayed with him as he waited to find out what had happened. After telling them to leave with his best friend, Rob, who had gotten him to hospital, he received news that changes his life. “Little did I know, minutes later I would get the most shocking news of my life,” he says. “I had been diagnosed with testicular cancer. I was only twenty-six.”

Though the news shook him, Derrico steeled himself and opted to stay in the hospital, with the support of his family, to combat the cancer. His mind was preoccupied with thoughts of how far the cancer may have spread and what he would need to undergo. It was then that he received some good news.https://twitter.com/thepipesurgeon

“Late that night, a nurse came into my room to tell me the disease had not spread and was contained. I was ecstatic,” he says. “The next morning was surgery.” While the surgery was a harrowing experience in its own right, it was successful and Derrico is now four years cancer free.

Having withstood such an enormous challenge at an early point of his life, Derrico was both elated and contemplative. He muses “I've had a few scares and I can't say it's been the easiest journey, but it's my journey. With the bad comes the good. I'm healthy and alive and not everyone is that lucky. I am lucky to have my life, my family, my home, and my business.”

Despite all of the challenges that he has overcome, Derrico continues to find success in his work as The Pipe Surgeon and dedicates as much time as he can to his family.
