• Rats and mice: Unattended homes seem to be open invitations to rats and mice. They can enter a home and proceed to gnaw everything, including your wiring. Result, chaos. Apart from the fire risk, the hygienic risks don’t bear thinking about. (Some types of ants, notably fire ants, can damage your wiring, too.)
