As the end of 2019 draws ever closer, with all kinds of deadlines that need to be met, it is very easy to forget to take a moment out to just breathe and relax. And for moments like this Madison McFerrin is an artist that fittingly provides the soundtrack you need. Her latest single, No Room exemplifies this.
The Brooklyn singer’s latest release from her forthcoming EP, You + I set for release on December 4th, is a track that easies anxieties. From its dreamy synthesisers mixed with laid back, yet wandering percussion, McFerrin provides a complete soul smoothness throughout.
Speaking on the inspiration for the track, Madison herself goes on to add, “The current climate of social and political polarisation inspired the lyrics for ‘No Room.’ We wanted to evoke a sense of isolated contemplation and yearning for connection that many of us feel these days. It was beautiful how this evolved into a communal DIY project that brought strangers together to create an example of what’s possible when we don’t let our differences keep us from connecting and collaborating in service of a greater vision.”
It’s a dreamy song with a dreamy visual. Peep the video for No Room below, as well as a few other tunes we’re loving.
Ego Ella May muses that ‘Girls Don’t Always Sing About Boys’ (Track of the Week)
The incredibly talented soul singer Ego Ella May, is back in a big way with her latest single ‘Girls Don’t Always Sing About Boys’. The single is the follow up to what has been a very relatively busy 12 months for Ego. Having taken a bit of a break from releasing new music for a few years, she returned with Table For One last year. Then her debut album, So Far, dropped in September. It was very well received by fans and critics of Soul music. ‘Girls Don’t Always Sing About Boys’ again showcases her signature Neo-Soul andJazz fusion sound.
The track truly optimises all of the ingredients for an exceptional soulful tune. With its laid-back, yet soulful hypnotic production the track serves as honey to the ears. Ella really taps into her Neo-Soul bag with flavours very reminiscent of the great Erykah Badu. Vivid lyrics such as “Will anybody listen at all if I don’t parade in a bra?” and “Girls don’t always sing about boys, What if I wanna talk about suffering, in the earth, the ocean plastic happenings?” paint a clear picture with the messaging.
A phenomenal track, ‘Girls Don’t Always Sing About Boys’ is the lead-single to another forthcoming album, and we are definitely intrigued for what that has in store. It just got dreamy visuals too. Check it below.
