Monday afternoon. The office is empty, with everyone sitting half asleep at their desks. A ringing telephone, and rings, and rings. Finally someone responds. A few minutes later, on the other end the prospect wants to meet with one of your rivals ... Wednesday morning. Workers arrive early and the place is busy, most people are on their feet, waiting to arrive at the filing cabinet, sharing sales statistics from the last weeks. A ringing mobile. It is replied with excitement and a willingness to close a sale within seconds. Fifteen minutes later the prospect put an order ... Well, there are two competing offices. What one you would like to be in? Then stop reading if you said the first, NOW! Any boss worth their salt would even be considering making such an office. Not even for being the opposite in answering my question. You see, you are a de-motivator, with every mentality. The inspiration of the Office must come from the management. Whatever degree that might be. From Managers Senior down.

Some people are natural managers but it will take some time for most to do so. Firstly, you need to have a constructive working attitude. When your team knows you can't get distracted, either with your job or with their actions, then you'll have the first form of office for sure. Second, you have to work hard at building a team. Mention the latter and you will find most of the workers are going to groan. Why? For what? And the only team bonding they care of is either a cold and rainy weekend in the mountains, running project experiments and solving problems. That hits in the middle of all but the most masochistic despair. And instead, they equate the creation of the term team with the touchy-feely sort of indoor activity invented in the 80s. That makes me feel awkward outside the office groper and the workplace bicycle! Both are both exclusive-that is, if you pick, it will preclude a significant proportion of the team from doing something good. And how can you get rid of those assumptions. There are still plenty of backward looking companies offering the dark, rainy, and touchy-feel team building. Look for a fresh way to stop those. Using corporate entertainment that adds the fun element; workers won't even know that team building is taking place. Treasure hunts or a day of thematic activity are activities that can function for real.

The search of treasure is a fantastic activity, because it can be accomplished by car or on foot. A successful search for treasure should be inclusive, that is to say engaging and inspiring even the most reluctant team member. The benefits of team-building are: > > communication growth, planning and strategic thinking. > > In order to get to know people better in the organisation. > > Breaking down barriers between divisions, the employees. > > In a comfortable crisis management works with workers. One famous corporate-themed event is based on the old BBC show 'It's a Knockout.' It will be perfect for use when the staff is young, competitive and energetic because it can be very physical and would probably end up with quite wet participants! The medieval corporate style case is an alternative to that. It takes staff through various medieval tasks such as archery, dragging the reluctant boar into the kitchen, constructing a trebuchet, storming the palace, the Battle of Agincourt, and finishing as the grand finale with the jousting competition. It's great fun, collaborative and builds all the skills that are necessary for a cohesive and productive team, as with the treasure hunt. If you have a conference at a company or prefer a hotel case, then something like a spy-themed day would fit well. Working on a tight schedule, teams tend to perform a number of activities during the day. The tasks require critical thinking, ingenuity, problem solving and strong communication as delegates are going to break safes, improvise disguises, recognise video evidence spies, disarm bombs, set minefields, move radioactive waste containers .... Again, highly motivational and based on vital team competences. But team building isn't going to have to be uncomfortable; for all the right reasons it can be fun-if you choose carefully.
