A CAT Training Course Is Essential For All Involved In Excavation

Very many contractors are required by the very nature of their businesses to carry out excavation work, and this could be absolutely anywhere. In the majority of cases, excavation will be undertaken in areas where there is a multitude of underground services, and the excavation must be carried out with extreme care and caution. However, there may also be underground services in seemingly the most unlikely places, and these must be subject to the same level of testing for them as in the obvious locations.

Before even putting a spade into the soil, a thorough survey of the area to be excavated must be undertaken using the CAT (Cable Avoidance Tool) and Genny (Signal Generator). These two tools combined can locate and identify the vast majority of underground services, but they are subject to certain limitations, and it is essential to understand what these are if serious mistakes are to be avoided.

Depending upon whose figures you believe, there are anywhere between 2 million and 2.5 million kilometres of underground services in the country, and there are approximately 60,000 cable strikes every year – that is around 230 every working day up and down the country. Some of these are only minor in nature, but many of them are serious. Striking an electric cable can cause severe injury and can be fatal. In fact, in most years there are around a dozen fatalities as a result of striking underground services while carrying out excavation, and there are considerably more serious injuries.

Apart from the injury potential, there can also be serious repercussions for the contractors involved. If a worker is injured or killed as a result of mistakes made by the contractor there can be claims for damages which can run into the hundreds of thousands, and it is unlikely these will be covered by insurance if it is found to be a result of negligence.

This is why Sygma Solutions runs a series of CAT training courses which show operatives how to use the CAT and Genny in all their various modes, together with their limitations. The CAT course that Sygma Solutions provides is recognised by The Survey Association, the EUSR, and the CITB among others.

CAT training from Sygma Solutions not only teaches the use of the CAT and Genny in combination, but also shows operatives the limitations of the equipment and how to overcome them.
