Last week, Facebook announced the launch of a new advertising strategy that will involve the reading of your browser history.
Yep. You read that correctly. Facebook will now be able to read your browser history in order to target ads more specifically to you. It’s hardly what we want to hear from a company that’s already been plagued with privacy concerns.
Over the next few weeks, Facebook will unroll its new preferences. On every advert that you see, you’ll be able to click on “About this Ad” to find out why you’re seeing it. You’ll also be able to change your “personal interests” to ensure that the ads you see are more accurately tailored towards you. In essence, this allows you to help Facebook to sell your information to third parties. This is crazy.
However, the good news is that you can opt out of this horrendous program – and it’s not all that difficult to do. Here’s how you can opt out of Facebook’s new advertising strategy:
1. Using any browser, click here to visit the Digital Advertising Alliance Opt Out.
2. Click on “Companies customizing ads for your browser“ in the middle of your page.
3. Select the companies that you don’t wish to receive ads from and then click to submit. It’s as easy as that.
Mobile users may find the process a little more difficult – but don’t fear! SurfEasy’s VPN service automatically stops any browser tracking, meaning that you can access Facebook on your phone, tablet or laptop without worrying that they’re tracking your information.
