Supervisor Academy Teaches Lean Leadership

The term “lean” when referring to business was coined by the Toyota Motor Company in Japan and refers to stripping out waste practices in order to make the company as efficient as it could possibly be.

The term “lean” when used in business is somewhat similar to the way we think about “lean” meat. The latter is meat that is stripped of fat and is composed of meat and muscle.

In industry, the term was coined by the Toyota Motor Company in Japan where it was realised that there were many wasteful practices and that they needed to be stripped out of the production process if the company was to become as efficient as possible and deliver better customer service. So stripping away waste makes the process as efficient and effective as it can be. A lean manufacturing company is one that is exactly that. It is where the relationship between that and lean meat becomes apparent.

In order to become as lean as possible, a company needs to make daily continuous improvement which should be a major focus. However, lean training, while it does have the effect of raising awareness, often doesn’t result in people changing their habits, particularly if they have been ingrained over a long period of time. Simply knowing that something exists or even makes sense doesn’t mean that it necessarily follows that new habits will be adopted.

Supervisor Academy teaches and coaches lean leadership using kata which is a martial arts term and are practice routines that develop the skills of an individual to the point where they become automatic. The individual doesn’t have to think about using them anymore because they have become ingrained into his or her thinking. They have become daily habits.

At Supervisor Academy, the Toyota Kata and TWI (Training within Industry) training results in supervisors and managers being able to run fast-paced experiments in order to close performance gaps and aligning their team improvements with the overall operational strategies of the company. As supervisors and teams incorporate new practices into their daily operations, they get better at improving and coaching.

It is now possible to organise Supervisor Academy training courses in your organisation to develop the improvement skills of your leaders and skills whilst at the same time generating hard, fast business improvement. This means you get a rapid return on your training investment (ROTI) and at the same time build a happier, much more effective workforce and leadership team for the future.

About The Company:

Supervisor Academy is a leading provider of training for managers and supervisors in the art of leading, as opposed to simply managing and giving orders. The company teaches lean leadership using kata which were originally developed in the USA over 70 years ago and refined by the Toyota Motor Company.
