New Delhi: The country’s steel production registered spectacular growth at 7.02 million tonnes in August, up 5.2%. India’s steel output has surpassed the world average in August as the global production rose by an average of 1.4% in August to 135 million tonnes compared to same month previous year, according to World Steel Association.

India’s steel production can be attributed to higher production by Indian major players and relatively lower production by China. The world’s largest producer China reported marginal growth of one percent in August with production standing at 69 million tonnes as against 68.2 MT in the same month a year ago, the World Steel Association data added.

China’s marginal growth also muted the global average steel production growth in August. However, for the January-August period, global average of the growth in steel production looked better at 1,096 MT, up 2.4% against India’s average of 1.8%.

India’s production during the eight month period stood at 56 MT whereas China produced 550 MT steel during the period.
