You may not really think about it, but the most important job a locksmith to learn is lock picking. This is the one skill they will use the most. Second to that is rekeying or changing locks. Like any other skill, you must learn how to pick a lock the correct way. Locksmiths used to have to be an apprentice or go through schooling to learn all the techniques used to pick a lock. Today, there are countless books and internet sites available that provide this information. Locksmith students no longer even have to talk to another person to learn these skills. (see reviews here)

In order to become good at lock picking, practice is required. Long ago, hopeful locksmiths used to have to try picking locks in their own home or friends and relatives home if given permission. The other common way was to purchase locks to practice on, but that becomes very expensive and usually ineffective since most packaged locks have easy combinations to pick. Most established locksmiths have learned their skills through years of practice on the job. Yes, this still works, but it could take many years to become good.

Here, we will give you a few tips for beginning locksmiths, students of locksmiths and hobbyists on some new resources that are available today. This will allow you to learn the skills of lock picking easier and faster.

• You could purchase a few high quality lock picking practice locks. If you purchase a few good ones, they usually are user-rekeyable. This means you can control the level of difficulty.

• You could also purchase a lock picking practice kit, otherwise known as a starter key. These kits are usually reasonably priced and include several practice locks, a sturdy stand to hold the lock, and a small lock pick set.

• A great way for a beginner to learn how to lock pick is by purchasing a cut away practice lock. These locks are great practice just like any other lock, but part of the outside holding is missing. This allows someone to practice picking the lock while being able to see the inner workings. This is helpful because the locksmith will be able to better understand exactly what they are doing.

• Start out with a lock with only a few pins in it. This will allow you to master an easier lock before moving onto locks with more difficult combinations.

• You never want to stop practicing. Keep practicing on different types of locks. If you feel like you have mastered all types of locks then try changing the combinations so the lock is always slightly changing.

As you can see, there are now many different methods of learning how to pick locks. We suggest you try all of these methods. You never know which method will work best for you. Just always remember that no matter how long you have been working as a Saint Louis locksmith , you should keep practicing. Locks are always changing and new technology is always being introduced.
