A recent study by the National Institute of Health’s National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research revealed that the benefits of regular dental visits stretch far beyond a person’s teeth. The benefits of regular dental visits have been clear for many years. Regular dental checkups keep plaque under control, help arrest gum disease before it becomes a major problem and let’s dentists identify and fix any problem with teeth before those problems get out of control. Now this important new study reveals that there are benefits that don’t have anything to do with teeth and gums.

This study points out that having regular dental visits for teeth cleaning , scraping an scaling helps reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. The researchers who conducted this survey looked at over 100,000 adults half of whom had never had their teeth cleaned and half who had. The study found that those who had their teeth cleaned at least once in their lifetime had a 24% lower risk of heart attack and 13% lower risk of stroke. The association between teeth cleaning and these two serious conditions was even more pronounced for people who had their teeth cleaned at least once a year.

The findings caught the researchers by surprise as they had always known about the benefits for teeth and gums, but they were surprised that the benefits were as pronounced for these more serious conditions. The conclusion that these researchers came to was that regular teeth cleaning reduces inflammation-causing bacteria and improves blood vessel function keeping blood flowing properly.

Regular dental visits are essential to the maintenance of teeth and gum health and most Orange County dentist recommend a visit to the dentist every six months. Now it seems clear that regular dental visits can also have a dramatic impact on other aspects of health including helping reduce the risk of some of the most deadly diseases.
