The US and Mexico have made a big step in stopping cell phone theft with a new bilateral agreement

San Francisco, CA - US Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski and Mexican Communications Under-Secretary Hector Olavarria Tapia signed a bilateral agreement last week that will help halt the use of stolen cell phones across the border.

The idea is to share databases so that companies in either country can see if a phone has been reactivated across the border, which has been a huge problem in recent years. The plan is to give people a clear message that they cannot get away with stealing cell phones for usage.

According to reports, nearly 40% of all the robberies in Washington DC and New York currently involve the theft of mobile phones. Officials say that a lot of these phones are now being sold across the border to Mexico where the phones can be reactivated and used for a smaller fee.

Recently, US cell phone companies signed an agreement that would share data on stolen phones and thus allow companies to block the reuse of any stolen phone. In a related agreement, United States and Mexican cell phone companies also released their intentions to share international stolen phone databases so that companies, even across borders, can help other companies pinpoint and deactivate a phone after it has been reported stolen.

According to the numbers, cell phone theft has skyrocketed recently due to the creation of the smart phone, most notably, the iPhone. With a device that can do so much and is thus very valuable, thieves see an opportunity to make even more money. The more stolen phones mean more money so it is no wonder that cell phones have become a huge target since the creation of the newest technology.

Hopefully, the new agreement between nations will at least slow down the theft of cell phones with the idea that they cannot be resold across the border, or anywhere else for that matter. Chairman Genachowski said that he thinks the announcement will help stop the “growing trend of stolen mobile devices.”
