What started as a business for a secondary source of income to fund their wanderlust, two entrepreneurs who had careers in banking and teaching, ventured into selling candies and sweets in the local neighborhood, within a 6-mile radius and next-day postal delivery. Advertising was done on Instagram and the value of their opening stock amounted to £100 of assorted candies bought from Costco.

Even setbacks like a serious break in just three months after opening the store did not halt the entrepreneurial spirit, by reacting to the devastation positively, recovered to build Sugar Rush Sweeties into one of the leading online suppliers of candies, and imported sweets.

Sugar Rush Sweeties grew by leaps and bounds during the lockdown and the owners realised that it was time to expand the online concept to a real store with unique products, to cope with the ever-increasing demand for sweets. When lockdown eased off slightly, this entrepreneurial pair saw it as the most opportune moment to dive in head first and sourced premises for a store in Garforth, Leeds, in the UK.

Although COVID-19 had tremendous positive effects on the business and caused an unusual growth spurt due to people exploring social media, there have also been negative outcomes regarding some aspects of the business.

The greatest curveball thrown by Covid is the challenge of getting access to imported sweets from Australia and America. Due to the demand for these unusual and unique sweets imported from these two countries, the unfortunate situation of being out of stock for extended periods has negatively affected the turnover of Sugar Rush Sweeties. Some of the most popular lines have taken months to arrive in the UK, due to import glitches at customs.
