Rotary Youth Exchange programs are of two types – the long-term exchanges and short-term exchange. The long-term exchanges last a full academic year wherein students attend local schools and live with multiple host families. Short-term exchanges, on the other hand, last from several days to three months and are often structured as camps, homestays, or tours that take place when school is not in session. Room, board and school fees are provided while students are responsible for their round-trip airfare, travel insurance, travel documents like passports and visas, and money required for any additional travel or tours.

Shedding light on the high school study abroad programs, the spokesperson added, “The Rotary Youth Exchange long-term travel program is our flagship study abroad program. The experience begins a year before students leave to study abroad, as they go through the application, selection and the preparation process. Once they are in a foreign country for their academic year, they live with as many as three or four carefully selected and trained host families. They study at a local high school and become bicultural and bilingual. Those participating in the short-term summer exchanges don’t attend school in a host country but get opportunities to tailor their program to match their interests. For example, they can include tours of specific places or regions.”
