Getting this type of job takes several years of school and training, but the task is not impossible. You will also need to know how the hydraulics function properly and how they coincide with the electronics and electricity to help them function properly.

The first thing you need to do when you are pursuing your career as an specialized repairman is to make sure that your high school transcripts and diploma are in order. You will need your grades from shop class, math, and science handy, as those are the ones that are looked at the most highly to become an apprentice or to get into the college program.

Then you need to check with your community college or find an elevator company that offers repair apprenticeships. You do not need a college degree to get into this field, but if you have a background in repair before you apply, you will have an advantage in getting into a good program or an apprenticeship.

The next step is to put in the application to your local union contractors and apply to be an apprentice in your local union organization, when they are recruiting, which does occur at various times throughout the year. You will need an interview and your transcripts and proof of high school graduation.

Once you have been accepted, you need to enter the program, which will last roughly four years. It is at this time that you will get your first hand experience and on the job training skills that you will need to become a professional elevator repair person for a reputable elevator company.

Finally, you need to take the necessary testing through the National Elevator Industry Educational Program and pass them to become certified and complete your apprenticeship. Once this happens and you have finished your apprenticeship, it is time to check with the union for available positions and apply for interesting jobs. These will often be office buildings or an elevator company that does business with large multi-level corporations that utilize lifts.
