Driving while tired is a significant cause of road accidents. A gadget designed to determine whether or not the driver is too fatigued to drive will help to reduce the risk of traffic accidents due to drowsiness. Read on to find out how the device works.

A study conducted in 2008 by the National Road and Transport Research in Sweden reported that around 20% of traffic accidents happen because of driver fatigue. It states that the probability of tired motorists to get involved in a traffic accident is eight times more likely than a rested driver. Tired drivers have poorer alertness, similar to intoxicated drivers.

However, the state of being too tired is a subjective debate where people don’t know just how much tired is considered as being too tired. This is why the driver sleep alarm was designed in order to monitor your driving condition. It lets you know just how tired you are and whether or not you should take a nap.

If you want to use the driver sleep alarm, you’ll need to finish a test which will configure your risk profile. The information from this is stored at the twist of a knob on the unit’s bottom so that the drivers can check their profile in a single device. A magnetic base is attached beneath the unit so that you can fix it to the dashboard.

Once you’ve activated the device, the alarm will constantly calculate your fatigue level using 26 parameters including the risk profile, level of fatigue from driving, amount of time spent on driving, and the speed from the accelerometer. It will also monitor your alertness by giving you small reactive test where you have to touch the unit as soon as it signals. The slower your reaction to the signal, the longer you take to react.

Through using all of these variables, the device determines the time when you are becoming too fatigued to drive and sends audio visual signals which indicate that you need to pull over and take a nap. The driver sleep alarm is sensitive to light and sound and therefore adjusts itself automatically for cabin conditions. Since the device also cares about speed, it also knows just how long you’ve stopped your car. So stopping for a few seconds to shut it up won’t work. It’ll only stop once you’ve stopped your car and rested for a fixed amount of time.

Driver sleep alarms are incredibly useful, no matter what the cost is. If you value the life of your loved ones who drive for long periods of time, you must consider having one of these. The least damage might be a fender bender but the worst can result in death, which is why driver sleep alarms can help you save a life. Over anxiousness to reach a place within a time span is no excuse for reckless driving, so safety is a huge priority. Sometimes, the best thing to do is to pull over and take a nap and then drive again when you’re refreshed.
