Today the local news has been all about a leaking holding pond. The pond holds (held?) water contaminated with phosphate. It is at Piney Point in a Tampa Florida neighborhood. If the pond actually broke open, it would flood land that is in use, and would therefore spoil some farmlands and residences. If we could actually get a clean and effective bill through congress and into law, it would perhaps help. Candidates of each of the major political parties in the USA have spoken about the need to update or repair the infrastructure of the nation. One would think this would be a field where there could be agreement forged, and the safety of the citizens of the US put first. One would think...

This local mess is bing "handled by pumping contaminated water into Tampa Bay. Tampa Bay and its tributaries are an estuary, which means these interconnected waterways are where baby fish and other sea creatures hatch and get a toe hold on life before venturing out to the seas.Because there is a wash of tidal salt water up into the creeks and rivers that flow into the Bay, we have brackish water. It is a mix of fresh and salt water which seems to be good for the babies, and the grasses that grow in the more gentle bodies of water, provide shelter.

This is April, the month of Earth Day. "Help take care of the planet.", says L. Ron Hubbard in The Way to Happiness. It is part of precept 12, "Safeguard and improve your environment."
