Soul Mates; Worth the Trouble?

Some people touch your soul more directly than others. The lucky ones have these connections in abundance. I can't remember whether I was still seven or had just turned eight when I first met my most abiding friend with her two long red braids and more élan than most. And here we are, almost fifty years later, still connected by the soul.

I am among the very fortunate, as I have many friends of the soul. My mother and father, and my brother, all are part of this weaving of spiritual connections. As are several friends from different stages and aspects of my life. This does not mean that all is always easy, on the contrary, when there are disagreements or perceived slights or betrayals, the cut is deeply experienced. It takes faith in the other as well as a certainty in oneself to heal

There are men I have loved deeply, but as our life paths expanded and we grew, we went different ways. Each of them still matters to me in a true way. Twenty months ago my husband of thirty-seven years died. He too needed to move on, to begin anew. I am still proud of him.

The truth of real affinity, that willingness to be alive and to experience the aliveness of another in harmony with your own, is a major part of the fullness of life. This connection, this affinity with others is a true expression of the joys of life, of élan vital. Without it, what is the point?
