Everyday Life Signals the Importance of Human Rights

Every one of us needs to know our human rights. We need to insist that they are taught and applied.

At Youth for Human Rights we believe that human rights should become a reality. This begins once people understand the concept of human rights. They then begin to seek their fulfillment in their own lives, examining their communities, families and personal experiences, through and through , from a human rights perspective. Human rights education can also lead to the recognition of injustices and discrimination. This awareness of human rights in everyday life underscores the importance of not only learning about human rights, but that people must know how to bring human rights to their lives. home and work, responding appropriately and effectively to violations in their own communities.

If we are asked, who needs human rights education? The simple answer is, of course, everyone. We also know that, to be successful, human rights education requires the endorsement and support of the entire education system, including those who oversee education, who license or certify teachers, who adhere to the standards and content of the plan of studies, and those who evaluate students, teachers and schools. These officials like anyone else are unlikely to have knowledge of human rights. They too need to achieve "human rights literacy".
