It is a dark and stormy afternoon. Suddenly, the door blew open and in came a rain soaked, totally miffed, cat. Perhaps the door had some furry help is its abrupt opening. The big, black, wet, furry boy cat was not purring as he stalked into the living room and sprang to the sofa, oh no. Well, at least he didn't shake the water out of his fur like s dog. The sleepy white cat, napping on the white box on the credenza, slitted open her eyes and grinned slightly. She then curled her tail over her nose and went back to sleep. This small drama is afforded me by way of lockdown. My cats are grateful for the access to inside or outside as they please, and seem to think I should always be an available servant. They pay no attention to the life and death human drama unfolding around them courtesy of this novel Corona Virus. They are above it all.

I believe my cats measure their competence by how well I obey them. Sometimes I wonder if they keep secret metrics or statistics. Perhaps it goes like this, "Finally she is doing X. It took three days, which is less than the targeted time, so we also get the bonus points! Add seven points to the graph." The last thing they trained me to do was to leave to porch door between outside and inside all the way open, and the door between porch and house unlatched. Thus the wet boy cat on my sofa.

Competence is an important aspect of living. It gives us a way to exert our own control of the environment, and to place our own creations into it. I am fully aware that I have allowed my cats to have some command. I prefer this set-up to being nagged every time any one of my three wants to go in or out, or hover in the doorway. It is an interesting way to share the creation of livingness at my house. Since as L. Ron Hubbard said, "one's survival and that of one's family and friends depends in no small measure upon the general competence of others.", I am glad that I have crafty and able cats.

(And to all the hep cats providing the sound track to my stay at home, Gracias!! You are a whole other breed)
