Volunteerism brings people together and helps with healing, as well as physical recovery.

It has been 20 years since the towers fell in NYC, the pentagon was attacked, and passengers took matters into their own hands on a third plane. It had been almost 200 years, 2 centuries, since the US had been breached. It was a totally shocking occurrence for every one of us in the US and for most of the world. Most of us in the US were drawn together in our effort to help one another recover and heal. I was among the army of volunteers who arrived at Ground Zero. It was an extraordinary and life changing experience. I was almost taken aback at the cinematic beauty of the scene. I had nothing else for comparison, just movie scenes. The work that was being done by uniformed 1st Responders, volunteers from formalized Non Governmental Organizations and Not for Profit groups was surrounded and supported by thousands of New Yorkers who showed up and worked just as tirelessly. Our home had been hit. We all showed up.

A group that tirelessly and continuously provided basic organization of the food, shelter and reclothing of volunteers was the Volunteer Ministers of the Church of Scientology. This group has the motto, "Something can be done about it.", as stated by their founder, L. Ron Hubbard. The Volunteer Ministers in their yellow shirts have become recognized around the world as a force of help in times of disaster. www.volunteerministers.org
