There are many types of swimming pools. They are named according to their use. Swimming pools come in many types: public, private, commercial, exercise, competition, and natural.

Public Swimming Pools

These pools can be found in a larger leisure complex or recreation center. Many of these centers have multiple pools to cater for guests with different swimming needs. You may also find a spa pool, hot tub, or sauna.

As part of their leisure facilities, hotels and resorts often have public pools. Many have a natatorium, which is a separate pool with amenities that allow for activities related to swimming. Outdoor pools are common in tropical regions. Some pools have a diving board at the one end. The pools should be deep enough to prevent divers from getting hurt.

Private Swimming Pools

Private pools are often smaller than public ones because they are only used by a select few. Sometimes, residential or home pools can be built-in above ground. Inground pools can be made of fiberglass, concrete, or vinyl liner. In areas where digging is difficult or impossible due to ground freezing, above-ground and on-ground pools are very popular.

Infinity

Infinity pools, also called vanishing edge pool, or negative edge, are visual effects that create the illusion of water that extends beyond the horizon. They can appear to disappear or reach infinity. If there is an elevation change, the illusion will work well.

Concurrence

Competition swimming pools are typically indoors heated in order to be used at any time of the year. The International Swimming Federation (FINA), or the Federation Internationale de la Natation, sets standards for competition pools. The pool should have a maximum length of 25 meters (82 feet) and 50 metres (164 feet).

Exercise

Also known as swim machines, swim systems, or swim spas, exercise pools are also called swimming machines, swim system or swim spas. These are just a few examples of different types of resistance swimming.

Natural swimming pools

Natural swimming pools attempt to duplicate the environment of natural swimmable lakes which are healthy, non-polluted and ecologically-balanced bodies of water. NSPs are 100 percent clean and safe for swimming. The water can be disinfected by biological filters or plants that have been planted in the system.

Ocean

In Australia, ocean pools gained popularity in early 20th-century. Lidos (or ocean pools) in Australia are created by either enclosing a portion of the rock shelf that water circulates through the pool or constant flooding of the pool at high tide.

Spas and hot tubs

In most cases, hot tubs and spas can be found in fitness centers, health clubs, or at the pool. These heated pools are used for relaxation and therapy.
