STEPHEN BISHOP DISCOVERS US CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY SCULPTURE KRYPTOS K4 PLAINTEXT

Stephen Bishop discovered the plaintext of the CIA sculpture Kryptos K4 can be directly constructed from the CIA New Headquarters Building design shape

On 2020-11-26, Stephen Bishop discovered that the plaintext for the final section of the CIA sculpture Kryptos, the notorious Kryptos K4, could be constructed directly from the CIA New Headquarters Building (CIA NHB) design shape without the need to cryptographically decrypt the K4 ciphertext.

KRYPTOS K4 PLAINTEXT:
WHTRONTSEWHTRONTSEWHHEASTNORTHEASTNORTHEASTNORTHEASTNORTHEASTEABERLINCLOCKEWTSEWHTRONTSEWHTRONTSE

Although the Kryptos K4 ciphertext is cryptographically sound and decipherable, this bypass process was possible because, a) Jim Sanborn (the Kryptos artist) had released certain plaintext words EAST NORTH EAST and BERLIN CLOCK allowing those shapes to be recognized in the building design shape, and b) the subject of the plaintext was the shape of the CIA NHB, which was readily available in public satellite photos and could be visually associated with the released plaintext.

Previous plaintext sections of the Kryptos ciphers (K1, K2 and K3) were esoteric sentences with themes of Discovery, and those sections required the ciphertext be decrypted before the plaintext words could be determined. The K4 ciphertext is different only because of the plaintext releases and the encrypted message being a visual code that was not easily recognized. [Stephen Bishop first recognized The Berlin Clock shape in the center of the building in 2018; four years after the CLOCK plaintext release.]

The Kryptos Sculpture was installed at the CIA (and dedicated 30 years ago as of today, 2020-11-03) as part of the construction of the New Headquarters Building expansion. The exact reason why the shape of the CIA building was used as the visually encoded message in the final K4 section is not known. But if the CIA building image is rotated 180 degrees, the shape does appear similar to an Owl head. The Kryptos artist may have intended to draw attention to this architectural visual pun. As the Owl is associated with Intelligence and this is a C "I" A building.

The Kryptos K4 cryptographic decryption remains a mystery still to be solved, though knowing the plaintext through this odd visual route will both make the decryption easier and more pointless.
