“Desperate times call for comical measures,” says CEO Matthew Sly of Emerald Pyramid Pictures, a young and highly motivated film production company in Colorado. “I couldn’t be more excited about our first feature film in development, Short Order Buzz Kill.” Sly and a good friend, Warren Madden, an actor in Florida, had the crazy idea for the unique film: a comedy-slasher-murder mystery detective story. All they had to do was find a screenwriter. Enter Tom Stohlgren, a seasoned scriptwriter with 44 feature scripts under his belt, along with several TV pilot scripts and novels. Matt and Warren told Stohlgren they wanted the script tailored specifically for actors like Jason Mewes (Clerks, Jay and Silent Bob, Dogma) as the lead detective and Pauly Shore (Encino Man, Biodome, Son in Law) with a strong supporting role, who they’ve admired for years, but have not been told about the project. “Like a Field of Scenes,” Stohlgren quipped, “build it and they will come?”

Fast-forward two months and Stohlgren completed and copyrighted the script. Sly and Madden absolutely loved the script. “It’s the funniest, most thrilling, spontaneous script I’ve ever read in my life,” said Madden. “The scenes jumped from the pages. I can’t wait to direct this blockbuster movie,” said Sly, who can’t describe the script without laughing. “In a small town outside Los Angeles, a disgruntled waitress at the diner finally snaps and goes on a killing spree targeting bad tippers, particularly a group of four stoners. When the waitress slashes and burns the town’s young, energetic priest in a case of mistaken identity, Officer Jason O’Leary (Mewes-like role), who has flunked the Detective Test three times, is assigned the case. The real target is the leader of the four stoners, led by Jason’s brother, Richie (Shore-like role). The waitress goes on to mistakenly kill the town councilwoman and only pharmacist, and the town’s only plumber, missing the stoners each time. The town is in chaos, so an inept blowhard FBI agent (a role written for Madden), is brought in to solve the case. However, when the Mayor, Chief of Police, and the FBI agent are killed, the case falls back in Jason’s lap.”

“It’s a fast-paced comedy of horrors,” Balme said, who signed on as producer. “And, of course, there’s a pretty, intelligent, and resourceful woman involved – Jason’s ex-girlfriend, and his brother’s current girlfriend,” she said. “But you’ll have to see the movie to see how Jason solves the case.”

The next tasks for Balme, Sly, and Madden are to cast the unreachable stars and secure funding for the film. Stohlgren’s Literary & Talent Manager, Eleni Larchanidou LLM, has offered assistance in all areas of the project, including agreeing to an Executive Producer. “If this all sounds crazy, it is,” says Sly, “but it’s a great script, and it’s going to be smash hit, so don’t bet against us!”
