Advance technology used in O2 sensors

These days’ oxygen sensors are being used quite commonly and its application is widespread. These O2 sensors are available in the market in a wide range of variety.

The use of these sensors is to measure the proportion of oxygen in the gas or liquid for the purpose of analysis. The original sensing element was made using a thimble shaped zirconia ceramic coated on both sides with a thin platinum layer. It is available in heated as well as unheated forms.

The ceramic sensing element mass as well as within the ceramic structure were significantly reduced in 1998, when markets started displayed the planar-style sensor incorporating the heater. As a result a sensor was developed that started sooner and gave fast response. The advantages of this sensor are many.

For measuring oxygen, there are many different ways such as electrochemical, infrared, zirconia, ultrasonic and very recently laser methods that are used commonly. Thus the importance of oxygen sensor is tremendous and one can have a choice of product that suits his requirements.

The most common application of these sensors is measurement of the exhaust gas concentration of oxygen and was effectively used for internal combustion engines in automobiles and other vehicles. Deep sea divers also use a similar kind of device in order to measure the partial pressure of oxygen in their breathing gas. The O2 has gained immense popularity in past few years due to its growing applicability. Many companies are manufacturing these O2 sensors and they are being used in many industries.
