Off-Grid Solar Demand Rises With 77% Australia Electric Solar Powered By 2026

Demand is on the rise for off-grid solar with 77% of Australia power being solar by 2026.

Australia's solar uptake is expected to reach 8.9GW by 2025, which is above the 14GW that is already installed. This man that solar could supply 77% of the total electricity demand at the time in the coming five years.

The Electricity Statement of Opportunities report shows how renewable energy generation and storage will have the ability to supply the country, while the coal plants start retiring. There are concerns regarding supply shortfalls and reliability, but there are no reliability gaps forecast for the next five years due to more than 4.4GW of new generation and storage capacity is being introduced.

The forecast seems relatively sure of itself for the next five years to the next ten years, as long as storage, transmission investments and renewable generation are committed. Coal plant failures remain the most pressing reliability threat right now, after the flooding of the Yalloum Plant in Victoria this June.

The report also showed that solar forecasts have been increased since last years forecast, to 8.9GW of new PV capacity power, which should be installed by 2025. In addition to this, utility-scale solar plants are expected to provide 6.5GW of power to commercial and residential homes, this excludes the Northern Territory and Western Australia.

Joe Springer, the Manager at Springers Solar, said “The demand for solar is booming with the focus now shifting from fear of supply shortfall to demand shortfalls. We are seeing more homes and businesses powering themselves through rooftop solar systems. It is expected that electricity demand will drop to a record low by 2025, dropping by 6GW in the next four years. The drop in electricity demand has fallen since last year, as numerous proposals flood in to solve the reliability issues.”

Since reports from last year, numerous thermal generator retirements have been pushed forward, including the Yalloum Power Station, which is due to close in 2028 and the Eraring Power Station, due to close in 2030. if there are no additional dispatchable energy or transmission projects on the market, the early closure of these power stations could result in reliability gaps in New South Wales and Victoria from 2026 through to 2031.
