SPINPRO Inc. Dewatering Company has recently been called upon to join an assembled team in the ongoing construction project as means of addressing an urgent need to bypass, intercept, and filter exceedingly turbid surface water storm entering the environmentally sensitive parts in the area around the company. This storm and surface water from large drainage area was traveling through an area under construction, then being directed to a large drainage ditch, thereby enhancing the system’s sensitivity to the degradation of water quality.

The project engineer employed the services of dewatering consulting services to check out the site’s requirements for enhanced sedimentation and erosion controls to contain turbid water found on the site. The contractors, including SPINPRO, worked closely with other companies to make specific erosion recommendations, including erosion control matting placed on exposed slopes, banks, and stockpiles. The team also recommended sedimentation control enhancements within the drainage ditch. The last component was, therefore, for the company to divert water flows next to the area under construction and filter the water to the acceptable levels.

For the team to address the targets, there were a lot of challenges which included the need to design, install, and commission a system that would automatically take care of the water flow ranging from low to high depending on weather conditions. Besides filtration, the system needed to cater to different water qualities, including sand and clay size particles that would greatly change dependent on flow volumes. After the system was made another challenge was encountered of installing this large filtration and bypass system.

Together with these happenings, numerous modifications and adjustments were also made to cater to increased precipitation events. Once there was full commissioning of the system, the water quality and the full range of flows could be transported through the bypass filtration system to achieve the desired results and the desired quality released into the receiving natural watercourse. The filtration and bypass system used a wide variety of automated piping and equipment which allows the system to take care of varying flow rates that are directly being affected by the weather.

The fully automated equipment also includes several diesel and electric powered pumps, light towers, generators, weir tanks, and integral organic flocculent additive. From very high to very low water quality readings, the system has been very effective and successful.
