Southlake, TX – Southlake Oncology is providing alternate treatment methods, creating a new hope in cancer patients.

A host of alternative therapies are available for patients undergoing cancer treatments, but many don’t understand the value they can provide. While they are best used in conjunction with medical treatments meant to attack cancer cells head-on, they can provide patients with effective means to combat side effects and the stress that so often coincides with aggressive treatment.

“Every patient is different,” explained one of Southlake Oncology Center’s cancer experts. “Not only is their case of cancer unique, but so is the way they will respond to treatment, including the side effects that present. For some patients, traditional medications meant to reduce side effect symptoms work well. Others, however, find that alternative therapies provide the relief they need to feel better and maintain a positive state of mind during treatments.”

While doctors only recommend alternative forms of therapy as compliments to traditional medicine, the value that some patients can realize from these treatments cannot be overlooked, the cancer expert explained.

“One of the keys in the battle against cancer is maintaining a positive outlook,” the expert said. “If alternative therapies help with this by reducing stress, promoting rest, alleviating nausea, and keeping focus strong, then they are worth their weight in gold to patients in the midst of chemotherapy, for example.”

There are a number of alternative therapies that have all proven quite useful to cancer patients. They include:

• Meditation – Stress is one of the biggest problems facing cancer patients. With the potential for some much uncertainty associated with the disease and battling it, stress is a major concern that can zap energy, prevent restful sleep and cloud the mind from focusing on a positive outcome. Meditation and other relaxation techniques can make a difference on all fronts and may even help with nausea for some patients.

• Exercise – Mild to moderate exercise that keeps the body strong during treatments can reduce stress, promote more restful sleep, and help maintain energy levels during cancer treatments. Tai Chi and yoga tend to make good choices.

• Massage therapy – This is an excellent option for stress reduction while also helping patients overcome discomforts often associated with treatments.

To find out more about potential alternative therapies that might assist in a personal case of cancer, be sure to consult an oncologist for suggestions.
