Understanding the Types of Invasive Breast Cancer

Dr. Kiran Kancharia highlights the various types of invasive breast cancer.

Southlake, TX, Mar 14, 2019 – Invasive breast cancer starts in the breast glands or ducts and grows into the breast tissue. From there it will spread into the surrounding lymph nodes until it reaches the other parts of the body. Breast cancer does not show any symptoms in its early stages, but later the patient will notice a lump in the breast, nipple discharge, swollen nipple, a change in the size and shape of the breast and more.

“It is recommended to take regular screening tests for breast cancer, starting with a monthly breast self-exam,” explained Dr. Kancharia. “By doing so, you can easily notice any changes in your breasts. Mammograms are also recommended, especially for people at high risk of the disease.”

Below are the common types of invasive breast cancer:

Invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) – Invasive ductal carcinoma is the most common form of invasive breast cancer, constituting about 80% of all breast cancers. It starts in the milk duct, then infiltrates through its walls and invade the breast tissue. IDC can be localized or spread to the rest of the body. Most breast cancer diagnoses in women in the United States come out positive for invasive breast cancer. Invasive ductal carcinoma is common in older women.

Invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) – This type of invasive breast cancer is the second most common, accounting for 10% of invasive breast cancers. It begins in the milk glands before invading the breast tissues and spreading to the rest of the body. ILC occurs later in life compared to IDC. Research has found out that the risk for ILC can increase with the use of hormone replacement therapy during and after menopause.

“Some patients can be diagnosed with both types of invasive breast cancer,” continued Susan Echt. “Work with your doctor to come up with a treatment plan that suits your situation.”
