Understanding the New Approaches in Treatment of Stage IV Colon Cancer

Dr. James Mackey highlights the various new approaches used in treating Stage IV colon cancer.

Southlake, TX, June 14, 2019 – Stage IV colon cancer is cancer that has already spread to distant parts of the body such as the lungs, liver, distant lymph nodes, bones or other sites. It is divided into unresectable cancer and cancer that has metastasized into one location. While it is perceived that stage IV colon cancer treatments are few, some patients can still receive treatment and get cured of their cancer.

“Researchers have come up with new combinations of chemotherapy drugs, targeted therapies and clinical trials to improve the outcomes of colon cancer treatment," said Dr. James Mackey. "Multimodality treatment is now the best approach that helps to increase the chances of a cure or prolonged survival in patients."

Here are some of the new approaches that are underway to treat stage IV colon cancer:

• The new approaches for liver metastases treatment – More ways of treating stage IV colon cancer that has spread to the liver are underway. The radioembolization approach is being evaluated. It uses radioactive microspheres that are injected into the liver vasculature that nourishes cancer cells. The radioactive substance will target the cancerous cells while minimizing exposure to the healthy parts of the liver. Researchers are also studying new approaches that will help deliver chemotherapy to the liver.

• New targeted therapy approaches – Scientists are exploring new targeted therapies and new ways that existing drugs can be used. Already targeted therapies like Vectibix, Avastin and Erbitux are used in selected patients found with advanced colorectal cancer. Tests will be developed to predict how specific patients will respond to certain drugs.

• The new chemotherapy regimens – New multi-drug regimens for chemotherapy treatment that incorporate more anti-cancer therapies are being researched.

• Techniques to manage colorectal cancer side effects – Techniques are designed to manage the side effects of colon cancer and its treatments to ensure optimal outcomes for the patient.

“The general treatment principles for stage IV colon cancer principles are applied based on how every patient’s unique circumstance is,” continued Dr. Mackay. “Participation in clinical trials can provide positive outcomes.”
