Southlake, TX – November20, 2019– Certain factors put people at the risk of developing lung cancer. Many of these factors boil down to lifestyle and genetics. The causes differ from person to person, but these are the main factors that put you and others at risk of developing lung cancer.

“It is important to know the things we do that are harmful to our health,” says Dr. Kancharla.

• Smoking: This is the worst factor of all with the leading ability to raise your chances of developing lung cancer. Passive and active smokers are at risk. The number of people using cigarettes is increasing year after year.

• Radon: This radioactive gas is a killer when it comes to raising your risk of developing lung cancer. A person is exposed to it through the air, soil, and in some rocks. Continuous exposure is harmful and can cause lung cancer

• Asbestos: People in the construction industry are familiar with this substance. It is toxic, especially when inhaled. Little doses can cause massive damage to your lungs, as it clogs up the lungs. Although it is not used today, people living in old houses should find out if asbestos was used during the construction of their homes.

• Air pollution: Fumes and carbon emitted from factories and cars are dangerous. It makes it even worse that we inhale these gases every day on our way to work.

• Family history: If you have ever had lung cancer, you are likely to develop it again. Also, check if anyone in your immediate family has ever had lung cancer.

• Age: People over 65 years are more likely to be diagnosed with lung cancer.

"People need to be aware on the causes of lung cancer and how this affects them," says Dr. Kancharla. “More people should know there are many other factors out there that cause lung cancer besides smoking.”
