Boxing is one of the most challenging and technical sports in the entire world, “the sweet science” as many would call it. It is a sport that inspires confidence, that teaches discipline, focus, patience, perseverance, humility, mutual respect, etc.… (there are many life lessons that we can learn from boxing). It is also very important to pass on these life lessons to the next generation AND start them off “right”, so they don’t pick up bad habits. Boxing is the perfect outlet to teach your kids about life, and how to be a fighter in life. When choosing a boxing gym for your kids there are a few things to consider in order to pick the most suitable one: 1) What does your kid need? (Does he/she get bullied? Does your kid have difficulty focusing in school? Is your kid physically healthy or out of shape? Etc.) 2) Will this activity fit into their current lifestyle/schedule? 3) Is this a place where your kid can build character?

What does your kid need? Bullying around the US has been a major focus for schools and for parents, as we’re learning more and more of the consequences of this issue. Many kids who are bullied in school grow up to be ineffective adults, because of low self-esteem, and never learning conflict resolution. Some boxing gyms like South Beach Boxing, on 715 Washington Ave., Miami Beach, FL, for example, offer an antibullying program for kids that teaches kids conflict resolution techniques, and how to protect themselves with boxing. Not to mention it raises their confidence, and self-esteem, in their ability to protect themselves. With boxing training and self-defense, kids learn focus, concentration, anger management, and they can get in the best shape of their lives.

Will this activity fit into their current lifestyle/schedule? Like any extracurricular activity, you want to find a boxing gym that offers a program that is after regular school hours and ends early enough so that they have enough time to do homework (example: 4:30pm-5:30pm). A program that begins late enough to offer a break from the long day of school, and ends early enough as to not interfere with school work. More than likely your kid isn’t trying to become the next Floyd Mayweather, so an hour long program a couple times a week should do the trick, depending on their level of interest.

Is this a place where your kid can build character? As I mentioned in the beginning, boxing can teach you many lessons about life. Without proper instruction and proper coaching many of those lessons can be missed entirely, or kids can get the wrong impression about what they are learning if they don’t have proper guidance. Kids, and teen boxers alike, are very impressionable, and it’s important that the people who influence them, steer them in the right direction. South Beach Boxing for example, their coach Romeo, not only puts his students through physical training, he also has short lectures throughout the training sessions that teach situational awareness, focus, concentration, hard work, patience, and more.

As parents, we want our kids to be the best, have the best, and grow up to be the best version of themselves they can possibly be. Give your kids an even greater edge by putting them in a boxing program. Use some of these guidelines outlined above to pick the perfect gym that your kid will enjoy, and learn some of the secrets of life in the process.
