We are thrilled to tell you that Rory J McMahon appeared in the much-awaited documentary “In The Shadow of 9/11” on the case of the Liberty City Seven, sharing his insights gained while investigating the case back in 2006.

About Rory J. McMahon

Rory is a Florida-based veteran private investigator, former U.S. Probation and Parole Officer, and the author of two textbooks on investigation. He is also a Certified Legal Investigator, a distinction held by fewer than one hundred investigators in the world, and the owner of McMahon and Associates Detective Division, which is a renowned and successful private investigation agency located in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

Why Rory McMahon Appeared in “In The Shadow of 9/11”

Not many people know this, but Rory has worked on some of the most sensational and publicized cases ever in the US. During his career as a private investigator, he had an opportunity to investigate the bizarre case of the Liberty City Seven, which hit the headlines when the FBI arrested seven men from the predominantly black neighborhood of Liberty City, Miami on charges of plotting to blow Chicago’s Sears Towers and go on a full ground war against the US.

Rory was hired as a criminal defense investigator by the defendants' attorney, Albert Levin to look into the government operatives, who painted a dubious picture against the men. During this investigation, he gathered sufficient evidence that could prove the arrest of those men was no less than a sham — an attempt by the FBI to assure the nation that there will not be another attack on the US post 9/11.

Rory had worked with the director of the film Dan Reed for six years, helping him get a better understanding of the case and sharing his experience while he was investigating it.

What is the Documentary About?

The film “In The Shadow of 9/11” is one of the finest works of Dan Reed. The film re-examines the forgotten case of the Liberty City Seven, which was sensational news back in June 2006, when the FBI arrested seven men of an obscure religious group called the Seas of David on charges of waging a war against the US, supporting al-Qaeda, and plotting to blow up the Sears Towers in Chicago.

However, the men had no connection to al-Qaeda, had no explosives, no weapons, and no history of terror or violence. Despite that, they were forced to plead guilty in the courtroom and were sentenced to prison. The film revisits the case through a series of audio recordings, surveillance footage, and interviews with the defendants, officers involved in the case, and investigators, including Rory McMahon, to shed fresh light on the case.

A new documentary “In The Shadow of 9/11” by director Dan Reed re-examines the unforgotten case of the Liberty City Seven; Rory J McMahon talks about the dubious FBI counterterrorism tactics in the name of national security

Maimi: A new documentary “In The Shadow of 9/11” on the Liberty City Seven case was broadcasted on Tuesday, August 10, 2021, on PBS Frontline, reexamining the case that led to the arrest of seven men from the predominantly black neighborhood of Liberty City, Miami, by the FBI in June 2006. The men were charged with an attempt to wage a full ground war against the US and to support al-Qaeda and for plotting to blow up the Sear Towers in Chicago, as outlined by then-attorney general Alberto Gonzales at a nationally televised press conference.

But the case against the men, who were members of an obscure Florida-based religious group called the Seas of David, seemed weak when the deputy director of the FBI John Pistole at the time of the arrest described the evidence against them as more “aspirational than operational.”

The men, nonetheless — as believed — had no connection to al-Qaeda, no weapons, no plots on bombing the Sears Tower, and no consistent ideology of terror and violence. And the evidence against them, which led to their arrest, was supposedly encouraged by paid informants who pretended to be al-Qaeda's operatives for $50,000.

The film “In The Shadow of 9/11” gives a fresh view on the case and represented the FBI’s shift toward the counterterrorism tactic of entrapment – paid informants, complex sting operations, fake terror plots — after the attack of 9/11, which was a heightened time of fear. It sheds light on the widely misused logic by the FBI out of the panic post 9/11 through interviews with the defendants, who have now been released from prison, and audio recordings and surveillance footage that led the FBI to raise a case against those men.
The film shows the Liberty City Seven case as a far fetched, half-baked attempt by the FBI under intense pressure post 9/11 to assure the public that there won’t be another terrorist attack on the US.

In the film, Rory McMahon, a veteran legal investigator from Fort Lauderdale, who was tasked by the defendant's attorney, Albert Levin to find information about the government operatives, provide insight into the flaws of the government case and find holes in the evidence. He also shares his insights and knowledge of the case he gained when he was working on the case back in 2006.
