1. Informally, without a written document
2. With a separation agreement
3. With a judgment of judicial separation

Informal Separation
Couples have the right to separate informally at any time they want. For separation to consider as a valid ground for divorce, the separation must be valid. The separation will be valid only if one or both the parties agree for it to lead to divorce. for an informal separation, physical separation is important.

Formal agreements of Separation
A deed of separation is a document that includes the terms and conditions of the relationship during the period of separation. There are 2 main categories, the first category contains terms relating to the separation that consists of the date when the parties separated, the living arrangement of both parties, and the agreement that both parties did not live together anymore. The second category includes the terms of financial arrangements between the spouses and other terms. For example, maintenance of the children, any division of matrimonial assets, and how much access the other spouse gets for the children.

Judicial Separation
Both parties can also file for a court order for judicial separation, under section 101 (1) of the Womenā€™s Charter. This course of action may be more onerous, because of the need to prove the irretrievable breakdown of the marriage, on the grounds of adultery, unreasonable behavior, or desertion.
