Dental statistics in the United Kingdom has been a concern for some years with only 58.2% of children visit a dentist regularly and only 56.1% of adults see the dentist for routine dental appointments. One-quarter of children in the United Kingdom have some form of tooth decay.

Children should visit the dentist twice a year, yet only around 58% of children are seen by a dentist each year. Interestingly, more than thirteen percent of children in the North of England saw a dentist than in the south. Tooth decay is also a common reason why children, aged five to nine, are admitted to hospital.

Forty-nine percent of adults in the United Kingdom have not seen a dentist in the past two years, with fifty-five percent of adults in London not having seen a dentist in the past twenty-four months. There are more than 12.7 million scale and polish treatments given to adults in the United Kingdom each year.

On a positive note, the demand for dental checkups has risen by more than twenty percent in the past forty years, but still more than half of those in the United Kingdom postpone or skip their routine dental check-up. Dental hygiene is imperative to preserving our natural teeth and our overall health.

Sixty percent of dental appointments are considered emergencies when the patient is in pain and needs urgent dental help. Twelve percent of three-year-old children have dental decay, which is still their milk teeth. Children are missing around three days of school each year due to being admitted to the hospital to have a tooth extracted.

The good news is that there has been a decrease in adults with no remaining natural teeth, the decrease was from 25% of the adult population to 6%. Only 17% of adults had healthy gums with no sign of disease.
