Kwan Family Gives $500,000 in Support of Southern California University of Health Sciences Vision of Redefining Healthcare
The Southern California University for Health Sciences is proud to announce the Kwan Care and Love Scholarship, a gift of Dr. Stephen Kwan and Mrs. Alice Kwan in the name of the Kwan family. Dr. and Mrs. Kwan’s gift of $500,000 will assist exceptional students in their studies at the university’s College of Eastern Medicine. The scholarship provides a minimum of 50 percent tuition assistance, and furthering the university’s mission to redefine the delivery of healthcare and healthcare education.
Dr. and Mrs. Kwan stated, “Changing healthcare means changing how students entering health professions are educated. We are honored that we can help lead this change with SCU.”
Students who would not otherwise have had a chance to learn traditional Chinese medicine will have the chance not only to attend the school, but to participate in an externship in Shandong, China. The externship places students in a position to learn from masters of traditional Chinese medicine on their home ground.
Dr. John Scaringe said of the family’s’ generosity, “We are extremely grateful for the generous support of the Kwan family. By creating a direct pathway for students to become Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners—the Kwan family is taking an active leadership role in transforming healthcare.”
Mrs. Kwan has an interest in traditional Chinese medicine, while Dr. Kwan is a respected cardiologist with an interest in the philosophy of person-centered healthcare. Both Dr. and Mrs. Kwan believe in rewarding academic excellence and giving back to their community. They were surprised to learn that SCU offered a wide variety of educational opportunities, and upon visiting the campus were surprised at the integrative healthcare model that brings the best of Eastern and Western medicine together for the benefit of the patient. Dr. Kwan called the University’s vision and educational model “impressive and unique.”
The university as a whole is pleased and honored to partner with the Kwans to bring excellent educational opportunities to students in need, and to further the university’s vision of changing healthcare and healthcare educational models.
