Azizeh Rezaiyan is a licensed therapist that runs the Silicon Valley Marriage Counseling Center in Palo Alto. The marriage and sex counselor provides couples with the space and the communication tools required to overcome their sex-related issues.
Marriages that lack sex and intimacy are fairly common in the Unites States. In fact, according to the Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy, the leading cause for divorce is a lack of intimacy between couples. 47 percent of the 2,371 divorced people found that marriages need intimacy in order to survive and flourish.
“Overcoming sexual issues requires an openness to vulnerability from both spouses. There is no intimacy without communication. Couples have to be ready and willing to openly communicate their fears, insecurities, and desires. And clear communication necessitates listening. If couples don’t prioritize listening and understanding their spouse’s concerns, they won’t be receptive to learning about the underlying problems impacting their marriage and relationship,” says Rezaiyan.
Sexless marriages are caused by a handful of underlying factors. A lack of clear communication about sex, mental illnesses, and performance anxiety are among some of the most common. Financial stress is another. Couples that are burdened with outstanding debt and payments find less time for sexual intimacy. Stress impacts a person’s physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing. This can often lead to decreased sex drive.
Rezaiyan further adds, “Couples who have been consistently avoiding intimacy and sex in their relationship, experience lower levels of emotional well-being, decreased marital trust, ineffective communication, and superficial emotional connection. Some couples may be able to survive a lack of intimacy, but most don’t.”
Rezaiyan’s sex therapy sessions are structured around spouses being comfortable with vulnerability. In order to achieve this, she cultivates a safe and healthy environment for couples to voice their concerns.
Apart from sex therapy, Rezaiyan’s counseling center offers services aimed at individuals such as anxiety counseling and male depression treatment. She also offers family mediation counseling, cross-cultural marriage counseling, pre-marital counseling, and same-sex couples counseling.
