Terminal tractors market project to multiply in high single digit growth

Terminal tractors, also known as shunt truck, yard truck or spotting truck, has seen a surge in its sales growth in the recent years. The versatile nature of terminal tractors have been pivotal to its demand growth. The demand for electric terminal tractors has been observed to surge in the recent past, with is further expected to pick the momentum, as the related battery prices go down. North America remains the key market for terminal tractors, though the demand is also increasing in Asia-Pacific and Europe.

New features augments the demand for terminal tractors

The manufacturers of terminal tractors are focusing on the comfort of the operator, as the inside ergonomics have been one of the key factors jolting its demand. Few years back, air conditioning inside a terminal tractor was an option for the buyers; however, the manufacturers have started to make it standard across their portfolio. It was due to this fact that several terminal tractors started to refuse working in humid environment inside the terminal tractors.

Another transformation in the terminal tractors can be seen in the form of exterior LED lighting. As against incandescent or halogen lamps, LED lighting offers better visibility to the terminal tractor operator. Third change in the structure of terminal tractor comes in the form of seats. The operators of terminal tractors are also seeking comfort of a car in the vehicle they operate. This has led the manufacturers to improve the seating quality of their terminal trucks.

The manufacturers of terminal tractors are also replacing inflexible welded frame with the rigid bolted frame in their terminal tractors. The terminal tractors with these attributes makes them easier to service and maintain. Besides, they are also including additional safety rails, non-slip surfaces and wider level rear platform to improve safety features.

Electric terminal tractor’ demand soaring

While the world has observed a spurt in sales of electric vehicles including cars, trucks and buses, the users of terminal tractors have also started to shift towards the greener technology. This has encouraged the manufacturers of terminal tractors to conduct research and development to build no-emission vehicles.

Mikko Lehtinen, Business Development Director of Terminal Tractors at Kalmar states “Environmental legislation is already pushing diesel engines to the next level putting more environmental solutions such as electric terminal tractors right round the corner. The tipping point will be when battery technology becomes cheap enough which is why Kalmar has focused its electric terminal tractors development to the battery software.” Terberg Benschop, a Netherland-based manufacturer of terminal tractors has also introduced LNG and fully-electric versions of terminal tractors.

Unsteady demand for terminal tractors

The demand for terminal tractors remains unsteady, and is highly dependent on the forecast of the projects related to terminal tractors. The Trump government’s vigorous steps on trade related to the U.S. and Brexit already have impacted the terminal tractors market in their own magnitude. Besides, other important business-political movements in trade impacts the terminal tractors demand. Terberg Benschop witnessed a slowdown in sales of terminal tractors in Asia-Pacific, one of the key markets for the company. It was due to the reason that operators in the region were offering shipping lines at reduced rates, causing a delay in terminal investments and thus impacting the order intake for terminal tractor manufacturers. The implementation of Stage 4 engines have also impacted the demand, as a result of the increased price of terminal trucks with the advanced engines.

Terminal tractors manufacturers focusing on new orders with improvement in product

Besides, Kalmar and Terberg, the other prominent manufacturers of terminal tractors include Leavitt Machinery, Konecranes, Daysworth International, Autocar, LLC, and Capacity Trucks. All of the manufacturers have been focusing on receiving new orders for the terminal tractors.

In September 2016, Kalmar won an order for two T2 terminal tractors from HeavyMovement in Spain. During the same year, Kalmar won a contract Gulftainer Lebanon to supply six Kalmar T2 terminal tractors. In 2016 itself, Terberg Benschop an order from C-Ro in Belgium for 117 RoRo terminal tractors for their terminals in the U.K. and the BENELUX. Terberg also received an order from MSC Valencia for 20 terminal tractors. Additionally, it received orders for five units, and 14 units of terminal tractors from Trieste Marine Terminal and STAM Tunisia, respectively. In June 2016, Kalmar launched its T2 terminal tractor, which it claimed was designed in inspiration from its customers. It has an ergonomically designed cabin, easier to maintain and provides over 100 different driveline combinations.
