What’s With Stress & Weight Gain
Can stress cause weight gain?

Yes, stress can significantly impact your ability to maintain a healthy weight, and even prevent you from losing weight.
You may be one of the many people to admit that when they are under stress, it can be difficult to hold on to healthy eating habits and daily exercises. With little motivation and effort to remain healthy, stress can cause unhealthy behaviours.

This is largely because of the body’s system of hormonal checks and balances. When your body perceives stress, your adrenal glands produce and release a stress hormone called “cortisol” into your bloodstream, ultimately resulting in behaviours, as well as processes inside the body, that cause difficulty for you to maintain a healthy weight.

In this article, we’re taking a look at the link between weight gain and the stress hormone. Let’s get started!

First and Foremost, What is the “Stress Hormone”?
Cortisol, known as the stress hormone, is a vital hormone in the body, with many purposes. It functions to maintain blood pressure, provide energy for the body, and stimulate insulin release for stabilised blood sugar levels. Although these are all necessary functions for the body, the actions caused by cortisol can result in weight fluctuation when your body perceives stress.

Normally, cortisol is secreted by adrenal glands in a varying pattern called diurnal variation, where its levels are the highest in the morning and lowest around midnight. However, cortisol is also secreted during times of psychological stress. This disruption of cortisol secretion can cause weight gain through an increase in appetite, and cravings for fatty, salty, and sweet foods.

Cortisol and Blood Sugar
Here’s where the sugar cravings kick in.
Increased levels of cortisol can cause an increase in insulin levels, leading to a drop in your blood sugar, and eventually, your cravings for sweets. So, when you’re stressed, instead of a salad or apple, you’re more likely to reach for cookies and ice cream – the basic “comfort foods.” When this happens, your body may store all the sugar you’ve consumed in the form of abdominal fat, which can be particularly hard to get rid of.

Besides, eating can be a source of solace and can lower stress. This is because the body releases chemicals in response to foods that can have a calming effect. Sugar supplies your body with the quick energy it needs, so it’s commonly the first thing you would reach for.

Cortisol and Metabolism
Even if you’re not one to eat foods with high levels of fat and sugar, cortisol can still slow down your metabolism, making it difficult to lose weight.
The varying patterns that cortisol is secreted, especially under psychological stress, can affect the body in many ways including spikes in blood sugar levels, impacts on thyroid function, trigger weight fluctuation, and symptoms of low metabolism.

In some cases, cortisol levels can cause hormone production from the thyroid gland. The function of the thyroid ordinarily helps to maintain a healthy metabolism, but high and low levels of cortisol secretion can weaken the conversion of the thyroid hormone from its inactive form to its active form. This can result in weight gain and the prevention of weight loss.

How to Lower Stress Levels
Well now you’re aware of the link between stress and weight gain, consider a few ways to lower your stress levels so you can maintain a healthy weight.

As a matter of fact, a regular-paced exercise is the best method for lowering cortisol levels that have risen because of stress. Practices such as meditation, yoga, and other relaxation techniques can also be used to keep cortisol levels balanced.
