Florida-based Orthodenco Orthodontic Lab constructs and provides Elastic Mandibular Advancement appliances to dental clinics all over the country. These appliances are effective treatment options for sleep apnea.

[NORTH LAUDERDALE, 03/19/2018] - Orthodenco Orthodontic Lab works with dentists who offer treatment for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The laboratory constructs Elastic Mandibular Advancement (EMA) oral appliances which are non-invasive and effective treatments for OSA.

Manipulating the Mandible to Treat OSA

A literature review in Bioscience Horizons: The International Journal of Student Research reveals that mandibular advancement appliances completely ease OSA in 40 percent of patients. Researchers from the Sleep Disorders Center of Virginia, meanwhile, recorded an 80 percent reduction in their participants’ number of apneas or hypopneas per hour of sleep. Finally, a group of Swedish researchers found that mandibular advancement devices are more effective for patients with mild to moderate OSA.

Orthodenco Orthodontic Lab crafts each EMA according to a patient’s measurements. The appliance is very precise: it fits the mouth like a retainer and contains elastic straps at strategic points. These straps move the mandible and the tongue forward (mandibular advancement), preventing them from blocking the pharynx and triggering snoring in patients.

An Alternative for CPAP

EMA is a promising alternative to continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), an effective treatment for OSA with low compliance rates. With CPAP, patients wear a mask which pushes air pressure to the back of the throat to keep the airway open while they sleep. The discomfort it causes drives many to stop or shorten their use of CPAP masks. In fact, a study in the Journal of Thoracic Disease shows that adherence to CPAP treatment is only at 40 to 85 percent.

In light of the possibility that OSA patients will discontinue CPAP treatment, Orthodenco Orthodontic Lab works with dentists to provide them with high-quality EMA appliances.

Customized and Adjustable

Orthodenco Orthodontic Lab constructs EMA’s based on the needs and specifications of each patient. It provides three lengths of elastic straps to accommodate a wide range of measurements and allow for later adjustments.

The lab coordinates with dentists to avoid errors and remakes. Its turnaround time is 7 days, but dentists can get the appliance earlier depending on the specifications and the clinic’s location. The dental appliance manufacturer also has a team of 20 technicians trained to use some of the newest digital dentistry equipment on the market.
