Herpes affects more people than most of us realise.

CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) estimates that one in every 6 people in the USA aged 14-49 are infected with genital herpes (HSV-2 virus), and that 776,000 people in this country become newly infected each year. The rates are similar in most developed countries.

Medical science says there is no cure for herpes: we know that the herpes simplex virus lodges in the nervous system, where anti-viral drugs are not able to reach it.

However, not everyone accepts that there is no cure – including some innovative medical scientists and alternative health practitioners.

We spoke with Belinda Greenwood, who with her partner has done most of the research for the new Herpes Cure Breakthrough website, and asked her about the claim that there might be an actual cure for herpes.

Belinda told us: “It would be almost impossible to prove that herpes has been cured... simply because the tests don't pick up on the virus presence in the nervous system. All the tests can show is whether the herpes simplex virus is active or not.

“But we do know that there are people who have had herpes, who simply do not have breakouts any more, and all their tests come back negative....

“Maybe you don't want to call that a cure... but it's as good as a cure for that person.”

We asked Belinda why more doctors don't know about these non-drug treatments for herpes.

“Doctors want to help their patients as much as they can,” said Belinda. “But most of the information they get about herpes treatment comes from the big pharmaceutical companies, and we know that those companies have a vested interest in NOT looking for a cure, and especially not supporting any research on treatments that can't be patented and commercially produced for profit.

“That's the main reason we wanted to provide a place to give people information about these sorts of treatments for herpes, and point them in a more hopeful direction.

“We don't want to just say, 'well, you just have to live with it.' It's true that herpes is mostly a fairly minor disease, compared with something like HIV for example. But there can be nasty complications, like meningitis, and there are risks giving birth to a baby when the mother has an active herpes infection. At the very least, herpes puts a load on your immune system and affects your general health and well-being. And it can be miserable, and painful. So people need to be able to get this information, and we wanted to have it all in one place, so that it's easier to find out about effective safe treatment for herpes.

“Even if you just help to reduce the breakouts, that is a good result for that person.”
