There is some speculation out there as to whether or not enhanced diamonds are real or not. Most of what you hear is just that; speculation with no basis to back it up. The truth is that enhanced diamonds are real diamonds, and there is very little difference to distinguish one from another.

What is clarity?

Clarity refers to the degree, and number, of imperfections found in a diamond. Because diamonds are formed deep within the earth’s crust under intense heat and literally tons of pressure, each one has some type and degree of imperfection(s).

These imperfections are called inclusion and blemishes, and even though they are naked to the human eye, they are very real, and all diamonds have them. When a diamond has too many imperfections it can negatively impact the clarity grade a diamond is given, and ultimately it will decrease its value. So obviously, the better clarity a diamond has the more valuable it is.

What does clarity-enhanced mean?

Clarity-enhanced simply means that a diamond has been manipulated by manual methods to remove or hide these imperfections; thus enhancing, or increasing the overall appearance of the diamond.

How are diamonds clarity-enhanced?

The two methods used to enhance a diamond’s clarity are called fracture drilling and laser drilling. Both of these processes have been around for many years, and they work well to hide or remove diamond imperfections.

When a diamond is laser drilled it means a pathway has been drilled through the diamond to the point of the imperfection. Then, acid is carefully poured into the drilled pathway, and it bleaches out the imperfection. Fracture drilling involves injecting a glass-like substance into the diamond to hide the imperfection.

Are Clarity-enhanced diamonds damaged goods?

Actually, the opposite is true. When a diamond has its clarity enhanced it can increase the value of the diamond because it will get a higher clarity rating. This isn’t always the case because diamonds aren’t valued by clarity alone, but enhancing the clarity of a diamond can significantly help increase its value.

Are they less valuable than real diamonds?

As previously stated, clarity-enhanced diamonds are real diamonds. Are they less valuable? That is up to you to decide for yourself. Many people have had their clarity enhanced diamonds to add value to them. Others believe diamonds left in their natural state of being are more valuable because they are exactly the same as they were when they were mined from the earth.

The truth is diamonds that have been clarity-enhanced can be extremely valuable when compared to diamonds that have been left in their natural state. Just remember, clarity-enhanced diamonds aren’t damaged in any way, and they are sometimes a better investment than non-enhanced diamonds.
