Southwest Forestry University (SWFU), located in Kunming of Yunnan province, was initially founded as the Department of Forestry in Yunnan University in 1939. After the establishment and merger of Kunming College of Agriculture and Forestry, Yunnan Forestry College and Southwest Forestry College (SWFC), SWFC was founded as a separate institute in 1978 and affiliated to the Ministry of Forestry. In the general reform of the high education institutions in China in 2000, SWFC was transferred from the affiliation to the State Forestry Administration to “joint development but predominantly administered by the Yunnan Provincial Government. On March 18, 2010, the Ministry of Education approved to upgrade it to Southwest Forestry University. Through 70 years of cumulative education experiences and 30 years of independent operation, the university has become the only institute of high learning in forestry in the Western Regions of China. The campus occupies 80 hectares, a 44 ha arboretum and floor space of 494,000 m2.
The University library stows about 1.2 million books, and more than 356,000 volumes of electronic magazines and books that are shared on campus network. SWFU’s fields of study are mainly centered on disciplines relevant to forestry, with unique features and excellence in environmental and biological subjects that encompass multidisciplinary degree programs in agriculture, science, engineering, law and arts. Its multiple-tier education programs range from mainly bachelor’s degree, master’s degree doctor’s degree and are complemented with continuing education programs, and advanced professional and vocational education programs, as well as special programs for international students. The university serves mainly for the economic and social development of the Southwest frontier regions of China focusing mainly on building sound ecological environment and developing the forestry sector of the region.
